Chinese Mythology: The Story of Chang’e and Houyi
Houyi was an exceptional archer - one whose skills were known far and wide. His lover, Chang’e was just as exceptional - her beauty was unsurpassed.
One day, the ten children of the Jade Emperor rose in the sky in rebellion of their parents. They scorched the earth with their heat and razed the ground with their rays. To save the world Houyi shot them down with arrows saving only one to light the earth.
He was honored for saving the world, but his greed overtook him. Fame and riches was not enough and he went in search for the elixir of immortality, and found it. On his return he hid it away for later, wanting to live forever with his lover.
However, Chang’e grew curious and sought it out. In fear that Houyi would be mad at her for discovering the elixir she finished it herself. In overdose she was carried away to the moon to live there forever, with only a small rabbit as her companion.
